AXIOMS of Communication based on local movies
Greta & Iolo: Four Sisters & a Wedding
Axiom 3 states “THE NATURE OF A RELATIONSHIP DEPENDS ON HOW BOTH PARTIES PUNCTUATE THE COMMUNICATION SEQUENCE.” We have different interpretations of what others say, often resulting in misunderstandings. One example of this scenario is when Bobbie witnessed Chad's infidelity and decided to tell Alex about what she saw. Although Bobbie's intentions were good, Alex interpreted it as Bobbie (who all the sisters viewed as the perfect one) being envious of her relationship with Chad and ended up arguing. Oftentimes, our relationships affect the way we communicate. In this case, because the sisters hadn't been on good terms since meeting, there was tension that led to misinformation.
On the other hand, Axiom 4 states that “COMMUNICATION CAN BE BOTH DIGITAL AND ANALOGICAL.” Our words and actions are interconnected, sometimes what we say can be understood differently depending on the level of relationship we have with that person and how we say them. Take for example, Bobbie, due to her rocky relationship with her sisters, her words get misinterpreted a lot and usually becomes the cause of the problems. That is why it’s important to be consistent with what we say and how we say it.
- AXIOM 3: Lani and Kai kept in touch with each other after their vacation in Lanai, Hawaii. Both punctuates differently from their constant communication. Lani interprets it as a start of something new; a fresh start of their relationship, but as it turns out, Kai perceives it only as a sole friendship. Misreading, misinterpretations of actions driven by both lost souls led Lani to believe they should be feeling the same way just because she ‘fixed him’.
- AXIOM 5: The relationship between Lani and his abusive father and her condoning mother really does show axiom 5 in the movie. In a flashback in the movie, the young Lani was beaten severely by his drunk father without her mother, brother or even her Aunt Vicky intervening in the said abuse. The hopelessness that she felt as she grew up left a sore impact on her and her family.
